Bryan R. Haugen, MD^*

A driving force in thyroid cancer research and treatment, Dr. Haugen is an endocrinologist and physician-scientist who has published extensively on the applications of thyroid molecular testing.

Dr. Haugen is a past president of the American Thyroid Association and recipient of the 2012 Paul Starr Award and 2019 Sidney Ingbar Award from the American Thyroid Association and the 2023 Outstanding Scholarly Physician Award from the Endocrine Society.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Haugen has made significant contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid neoplasms, including development of guidelines for the management of patients with thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer.

As Clinical Liaison of ThyroSeq Program, Sonic Healthcare USA, Dr. Haugen serves as a bridge between the ThyroSeq molecular testing program and the medical community with a focus on educational outreach. He is available for direct consultation by interested clinicians.

Dr. Sosa, MD, MA, FACS is the Leon Goldman, MD Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCSF. She is an endocrine surgeon specializing in thyroid tumor surgery and care, and she is the author of >400 peer-reviewed publications and 80 book chapters and reviews. Her research focus includes health outcomes, healthcare delivery, hyperparathyroidism, and thyroid cancer. Dr. Sosa’s research identified an important correlation between surgeon experience level and complication rates for thyroidectomy.

Dr. Sosa is a past president of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Thyroid Oncology Group. She co-chaired the committee which developed the 2025 American Thyroid Association Management Guidelines for Adult Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer.

Her efforts to mentor more than 90 students, residents, and fellows were recognized via induction as a full member to the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Educators in 2020. She was a recipient of the ATA Lewis E. Braverman Distinguished Lectureship Award in 2017 and the ATA Distinguished Service Award in 2022. In 2022, she received the UCSF Chancellor’s Diversity Award for the Advancement of Women.

Yuri Nikiforov, MD, PhD^{*

Dr. Nikiforov is a world expert on thyroid pathology and the molecular mechanisms of thyroid cancer. At UPMC, he serves as Vice-Chair for Molecular Pathology, is Director of the Division of Molecular and Genomic Pathology, oversees the operations of the Molecular and Genomic Pathology laboratory and is the Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Thyroid Center.

He is one of the inventors of the ThyroSeq® thyroid molecular test. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles, and he is a senior editor of the textbook “Diagnostic Pathology and Molecular Genetics of the Thyroid.” His research program is focused on molecular mechanisms of thyroid cancer, radiation carcinogenesis, and molecular diagnostics. In 2016, he led an international group of physicians and scientists to reclassify a type of thyroid cancer as a non-cancer called NIFTP, which prevented a cancer diagnosis and reduced over treatment for thousands of patients worldwide.

He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and a recipient of the 2007 Van Meter Award, the 2017 Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship Award from the American Thyroid Association, and the 2016 Aldo Pinchera Award from the Italian Thyroid Carcinoma Observatory. He has served as part of the American Thyroid Association task forces that developed the 2012 and 2021 Guidelines for Management of Patients with Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer and the 2015 Management Guidelines for Adult Patients with Thyroid Nodules and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer.

Dr. Tuttle is Chief of the Endocrinology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Professor of Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York. His clinical practice is solely focused on management of patients with thyroid cancer.

Dr. Tuttle’s research focuses on thyroid cancer risk of recurrence and death, active surveillance as a management option for low-risk papillary thyroid cancer, and treatment de-escalation protocols to properly match treatment intensity and follow-up to individual risk. He designed and validated the first thyroid cancer real-time risk assessment model, in which risk assessments are adjusted based on response to therapy. Dr. Tuttle’s work has greatly impacted management paradigms for patients with differentiated thyroid cancer.

Dr. Tuttle was part of the committee which drafted the 2015 American Thyroid Association Management Guidelines for Adult Patients with Thyroid Nodules and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer. His work has been recognized with many awards, including the Lewis E. Braverman Distinguished Award from ATA in 2018 and the Outstanding Scholarly Physician Award from the Endocrine Society in 2020.
