Dr. Sosa, MD, MA, FACS is the Leon Goldman, MD Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCSF. She is an endocrine surgeon specializing in thyroid tumor surgery and care, and she is the author of >400 peer-reviewed publications and 80 book chapters and reviews. Her research focus includes health outcomes, healthcare delivery, hyperparathyroidism, and thyroid cancer. Dr. Sosa’s research identified an important correlation between surgeon experience level and complication rates for thyroidectomy.
Dr. Sosa is a past president of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Thyroid Oncology Group. She co-chaired the committee which developed the 2025 American Thyroid Association Management Guidelines for Adult Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer.
Her efforts to mentor more than 90 students, residents, and fellows were recognized via induction as a full member to the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Educators in 2020. She was a recipient of the ATA Lewis E. Braverman Distinguished Lectureship Award in 2017 and the ATA Distinguished Service Award in 2022. In 2022, she received the UCSF Chancellor’s Diversity Award for the Advancement of Women.
